We directly... read more agreed since his english was very good and he seemed to be a nice guy. The next day we had a wonderful trip which lasted much longer then we agreed and Herbert was very enthusiastic and showed us a lot of animals and told us many things about the plants in the park. We experienced him as an excellent ambassador for Costa Rica and its nature and apart from that he has a lot of knowledge on many subjects. Therefor we agreed to meet him the next day again for a tour to the mangroves of Isla Damas. This was also a private tour and he behaved as if it was his first time that he saw a boa constictor, an osprey, mangroves, pelicans etc. His enthusiasm was contagious and we enjoyed it a lot. Don't look any further when you want a guide enthusiastic guide who also speaks English fluently; we recommend Herbert THE GUIDE.

We visited Monteverde and decided to take a guided tour of Curi-Cancha and then visit the Monteverde reserve on our own. Good decision! Herbert was an exceptional guide with an... read more broad and deep knowledge of birds, mammals, plants and even the history and future of the area. I attempted Spanish but his English was too good to make my efforts worthwhile. We learned a ton and spotted multiple birds including bell birds, toucans, and several quetzales (male and female). Amazing. There is a separate area for hummingbirds where Herbert gave us good tips for filming them in flight. He was also really skilled at capturing great photos through our iPhone cameras via the scope that he brought along. After the approx 2.5 hours of walking through the beautiful park like reserve, we stopped with Herbert at the local crafts co-op, coffee house and dairy where we had ice cream and bought fresh cheeses. This was unplanned but Herbert graciously waited while we shopped a bit and enjoyed coffee tasting. High recommend this adventure.

When visiting Monteverde we hoped to see the quetzal, as we are hobby birdwatchers, but we didn’t expect too much. Thanks to our guide Roy it didn’t take us more... read more than five minutes to spot the first quetzal - a female- and soon later we saw the beautiful male bird flying up to her and then resting close by. It was absolutely mesmerizing! Lateron Roy showed us other rare and interesting birds (including an owl) and told us a lot about the flora and fauna of Monteverde. The park itself is really beautiful and thanks to Roy it was one of the best tours we have ever made. Highly recommended!

Herbert started his bird spotting from the moment we left our hotel as they were everywhere if you just knew where to look! We hiked around Curi Cancha plus a few other spots he knew about before and after so we had many opportunities. We're not experts so his bird knowledge was very helpful and we thoroughly enjoyed our morning tour (just the two of us). Note you can rent binoculars in Curi Cancha and the entry fee is extra. Sadly we didn't spot a quetzal as sometimes you just don't get lucky. However he made an extra effort to drive us to find the amazing three-wattled bellbird in another location. So cool!
